Islet of Chytra
The rugged and rocky islet of Chytra lies 3 miles from the bay of Kapsali. Its precipitous terrain is inaccessible to the average visitor making it a prime nesting site for hundreds of wild seabirds throughout the year. It is, however, famous for the large numbers of the yellow wild flower, known as Sempreviva (everlasting flower), that only grow there and that are collected every spring by a very few brave young locals who take on the challenge of climbing the unique and hostile rock formations to reach the top of the islet to collect the semidry flowers.
Chytra is also famous for its magnificent cave which offers the visitor the warm embrace of emerald waters shimmering in the bright Greek sun. When the sun sinks into the sea at dusk, it paints the rocks of the cave, as well as the blue crystal-clear sea waters a myriad of colours. Weather permitting, the boat will sail to the south side of the island to anchor inside this huge cave, so we can swim and snorkel admiring the thousands of colours of the seabed inside the cave, and discover the wealth of life under the waves (equipment is provided by the captain). If you prefer not to swim or dive, you are free to remain on-board to admire the wild rocks and the unprecedented scenery.”
